 3 day embroidery Workshop with Yvonne Menear

Yvonne Menear lives in Langley, British Columbia, and is an international speaker and educator for the home sewing industry. She concentrates on teaching quilting, machine embroidery, quilt design, digitizing machine embroidery, and teaching basic computer skills for the home sewer.

As a quilter and machine embroidery individual, I learned very quickly that I could do so much more with my computerized machines if I knew how to use the computer and all the different programs that support our quilt designing and machine embroidery designing. Using the internet for information and resources for products really helped me to grow in my love of sewing. I realized this is the type of information others needed to have also, so I began my teaching career. I had all ready retired from my career as a dental hygienist of 40 years to now become even busier with my career of teaching sewing and all the related topics.

I have written many magazine articles over the years about quilting and machine embroidery and had the opportunity to work with The Electric Quilt Company in developing their EQStitch embroidery digitizing software and beta tested the EQ8 software. With the release of EQ8, I continually write lessons on the EQ blog, and have a chapter in the EQ8 Designing More Quilts book, published in the fall of 2018. I travel internationally teaching quilt designing and digitizing machine embroidery.

 I plan on having loads of content in the class to cover!  I will address hooping techniques, fabric selection, needles, threads, tension settings, stabilizers, and so much more.  I am digitizing several different designs for students to stitch that will support the techniques I will discuss.  By stitching quick little designs, students will get the reinforcement of the lesson on why certain threads, needles, and design steps are used.  This information will then be able to be applied to any designs you may have purchased.  Students will know why we do what we do to produce the best outcomes.  We are not making projects.  We are stitching designs to teach different techniques.  Some techniques will be creating are fringe, applique in the hoop, using deeply textured fabrics, understanding knockdown stitches, knowing when to use a topper, difference between using tear away stabilizer and wash away stabilizer, free standing designs, lace, and more.  I am creating designs now that will support each of the different techniques I discuss.  The course will have comprehensive handouts for the students along with a PowerPoint presentation and loads of samples/examples for them to view.  I think this approach will serve the variety of different machines that will be there along with all the different levels of learning (beginner to advanced students).

STUDENT SUPPLIES REQUIRED-

Embroidery machine in good working condition.All embroidery hoops, arms, power cord, extension cord, and USB stick.

Student must be able to stitch a 5 x 7 inch stitch field in their hoop (125 x 175 mm).This needs to be a single hoop and not a multi-position hoop.They can use a larger hoop if their machine does not have a 5 x7 inch hoop.It is always best to use the smallest hoop they have that will accommodate the 5 x7 inch stitch field required.

Their machine must be able to accept designs through a USB port.They need to bring an empty USB stick that has their name and file type required marked on the stick.If they have a Janome machine, they must have their stick formatted to their specific machine to transfer class designs to their machines.

They will need an assortment of needles. The sizes they will need are size 12 and 14.The types they will need are embroidery, non-stick, and topstitch.These are used most frequently in embroidery designs.

They need to bring fabric to stitch the test sew designs.We will be doing multiple hoopings so I suggest they have at least 1 meter of fabric.Solid color fabric shows stitches the best.Print fabrics will not show the stitch samples.I suggest they not bring their good fabric for these test sew designs.These will be for their reference only.The best fabric to test the designs are a muslin or cotton in white or off white.They can use an old sheet if purchasing fabric is a financial issue for them.

They need to have at least a meter each of tear away and wash away stabilizers.I suggest Pellon 806 tear away and Pellon 541 wash away.These products can be found at Thread & Paper.We use these stabilizer products all the time in machine embroidery and I personally purchase them by the bolt so I have them on hand for my stitching.

They need to bring an assortment of threads for stitching.Any 40-weight thread will work for most embroidery designs.The type of threads they can use are cotton, rayon, and polyester.The manufacturer of the thread is not as important as the thread type and weight.We will not be using metallic threads in this class.

They must have bobbin thread that is light weight. They can use a pre-wound bobbin that fits their machine if it is the lightweight thread on the bobbin.

I suggest they have a spare bobbin case on hand for their machine in case it gets damaged during stitching.Some machine brands have a specific bobbin case for embroidery and they need to have that.

Please have the students bring all their accessory tools/feet that came with the machine.Also have them bring their manual that came with the machine.

They will need to have some batting pieces to use for the designs.The batting can be scraps that are at least 6 x 8 inches in size for each of the designs they will be stitching.

We will be stitching at least one free standing lace design in class.I suggest they have some bridal tulle to use as a stabilizer for these designs.They need pieces at least 6 x8 inches in size for the lace designs.This must be tulle and not a heavier netting fabric.

Please bring thread snips, fabric cutting supplies, and 505 spray adhesive.

They need to arrive early for the class to start promptly on time.I need time to load their designs onto their USB sticks on the first day while they are setting up their machines.

They need to bring lunch with them and whatever drinks they want.We will take a small break for lunch each day but there is not enough time for them to leave and go to a local restaurant.I do want them to have their drinks in a mug with a sealed lid so it will prevent issues it if gets knocked over in class.
